The wording Nickel tested in a cosmetic product certifies that the quantity of Nickel is present in the product in question in traces lower than 0.00001% or in a quantity 10 times lower than that considered the threshold that determines an allergic reaction in sensitized subjects. This content is in fact considered below the limits of relevance and therefore negligible. This means that an allergic reaction cannot be excluded, but that the risk is significantly reduced. The law (EC Regulation no. 1223/2009) in fact prohibits the presence of this element in cosmetics but given the impossibility of completely eliminating this impurity, it allows the presence of traces within the permitted limit of 0.00001%. Nickel is in fact not an ingredient of cosmetics but a substance derived from raw materials due to their impurity, or in some cases released by processing machinery. For this reason it is not possible to have Nickel free products.
Self-monitoring carried out by companies is therefore not mandatory (since the law already excludes its presence) but it is a greater security that is intended to be given to the consumer.
