GoodWeave

Information

GoodWeave works to end child labor in global supply chains. Permanently.
For over 25 years, GoodWeave has pioneered and innovated a system that leverages market power through its work with brands and manufacturers. GoodWeave has positively influenced social norms and business practices to eliminate child labor. They began by focusing on carpet production, moved by the story of Iqbal Masih, and more recently, the organization has expanded into apparel, home textiles, jewelry, bricks, and tea.
The GoodWeave system combines the power of consumers and businesses to ignite the engine of social change. In partnership with brands, they are creating a market for products made without child labor, preventing and saving children from a life of slavery, and distinguishing selected products with the GoodWeave label.
GoodWeave sets clear and rigorous standards and verifies compliance by regularly mapping and inspecting factories, work sites and facilities down to the artisans and individual homes. These inspections, which are random, unannounced and frequent, lead them to exploited children and act as a powerful deterrent against bad labor practices.
GoodWeave’s social programs serve victims of child labor. Over the years, they have established early childhood education centers, coordinated homeschooling, provided school sponsorships, and created second homes for children in desperate need.
They want to improve conditions for all workers. Effectively addressing child labor requires more than simply banning the practice by law. An important part of the equation is ensuring that adult workers are better paid and treated better in their workplaces.
