Over the last 20 years Nomads has uncompromisingly carried exclusively fair trade clothing.
This means ensuring that standards are met adheres to fair trade guidelines. Nomads has always supported the policy of 'trade not help', believing that this is the best way to help maintain a sustainable and profitable life for the producers and ourselves. Our love for Indian craftsmanship and desire to maintain these traditions is sewn into the fabric of these clothes. Villages like Bagru are known for their beautiful Block Print, which you'll find in many of this season's classic pieces. Supporting artisans is another way Nomads is able to promote traditional skills.
Fair trade also takes environmental issues into consideration. For the last 6 years Nomads have been working towards finding new ways to reduce the environmental impact our products have on the planet. Organic cotton is now more available to us and we are happy to increase this range once again for the new collection.
Organic farming means that no harmful chemicals are used and the land requires less water.
Packaging: Our packaging is recycled and we use biodegradable postbags which are helping to reduce the impact of the business on the environment.
The Nomads Clothing Promise
- No children under 16 years old take our products.
- We provide equality between men and women in pay and opportunities in the workplace.
- We pay a fair wage to all workers that is either at or above the national average.
- We guarantee safe working conditions, regular breaks and holidays for all workers.
- We pay manufacturers up front so they don't go into debt to purchase materials.
- We promote traditional crafts such as Handloom Khadi and Tie Dye to keep these traditions alive and provide vital income for the villages.
- We work with small rural communities delivering commercial projects, which provide essential support for disadvantaged people in rural areas.
- We always use Azo Free and natural dyes which have the least impact on the environment. We encourage our organic cotton range to promote sustainable fashion and protect the health and well-being of farmers.
- To recycle materials and reuse waste fabrics, we make beautiful bags.
- We will continue our research, in order to increase our range of organic cotton and biodegradable packaging.
- We promote awareness of the need to shop responsibly and push multinationals to work towards fair trade on a global level.
Working conditions
We personally inspect all the factories where our clothing is made.
We do this regularly to ensure workers are treated fairly and with respect, with regular visits throughout the year.
In India, it is illegal to use children under 16 years of age and this law is confirmed by all our suppliers. Workers are paid a good hourly rate. Wages are set by the Indian government by dividing workers into unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers. All employee salaries meet or exceed these levels for compensation. There is also equal opportunities for men and women who are paid the same wage for the same work – which is very important to Fairtrade principles.
There are pension schemes in place which employees can join and companies pay contributions to. Manufacturers benefit from a variety of subsidies and tax breaks for exporting goods in foreign currency. This is an incentive for factories to maintain good working conditions and responsible labor practices.

Nomads the story
Duncan and Vicky met while traveling in India in the late 1980s. With just £200 left in their pockets, they used the money to fill a trunk with beautiful ethnic clothing and returned to the UK.
They soon returned to India with the profits they had made, mixing business with pleasure; at Buddhist retreats, they discovered crafts in local markets and picked up beautiful handmade textiles along the way. A shared love for India and its culture inspired them to start their own clothing company. Inspired by Indian craft, they worked with a designer to create styles perfect for the European market, finding a niche for bohemian fashion with an ethnic twist.
Nomads creates clothing with every single woman in mind. For those who see life as a wonderful adventure. Soft, colorful, feminine clothes that are comfortable and flowy. Nomads also has a respect for people and nature, strongly believing in fair trade values and following ethical fashion guidelines.
