White Mallow derives its exceptional soothing, protective and humidifying properties above all from the large quantity of mucilage (polysaccharides) present in its roots. This mucus that is created thanks to the addition of water calms the skin and protects it from external stimuli by creating an envelope. Furthermore, White Mallow, containing fats similar to those of the epidermis, helps to support the healthy development of the skin and its natural protective action.
Thanks to these properties it is particularly suitable for the treatment of hypersensitive skin of newborns and children . Newborn skin is in itself very delicate and fragile as it is very thin (5 times thinner than that of an adult) and often still has an insufficient thermoregulation capacity. This makes the newborn's skin very sensitive to external agents against which it is not yet able to defend itself and therefore flaking, dry skin or redness may occur. This hypersensitivity can sometimes lead to atopic dermatitis , a mostly genetic pathology, which manifests itself especially on the face and in the flexion areas of the limbs such as the knees and elbows following external stimuli such as pollution, dry air, food allergies to which the skin is not yet able to create defensive barriers.
To help the baby's skin protect itself and mediate the external agents it comes into contact with, it is necessary to help it develop these protective barrier functions in the first months of life.
Who is Weleda?
Since 1921 Weleda has been producing natural cosmetics by exploiting the properties of hundreds of medicinal plants, an experience that today leads it to be synonymous with quality and professionalism in the field of organic and ecological cosmetics and at the forefront in attention to environmental sustainability and maintenance of biodiversity.
Ethics Weleda
Weleda carries out its work with an important guiding objective, namely the use of resources, raw materials, packaging, energy and water, in a sustainable way in order to guarantee adequate living conditions for future generations. But the sustainability that Weleda takes care of is not only environmental, but also social and economic by recognizing fair remuneration and establishing long-term contracts.
The quality of Weleda cosmetics
The quality of Weleda cosmetic products can be found in every single process and manufacturing phase, but what we would like to underline is that in all cosmetics only vegetal raw materials from organic and biodynamic cultivation, or from certified spontaneous harvesting, are used. As Weleda declares, out of respect for man and nature, absolutely no perfumes, mineral oils and synthetic substances such as paraffin, silicones, parabens or GMO raw materials are used. The wonderful fragrances that enrich the products come only from essential oils carefully extracted from the plant. Given the ethics and respect for man, Weleda carries out tests on animals.
Cultivation of medicinal plants
Weleda directly grows approximately three-quarters of the medicinal plants it uses for its cosmetic products in its magnificent and immense gardens scattered throughout the world. Here the gardeners carry out a complex job which is to help nature where it needs it, for example by recreating the natural habitat for certain species. Cultivation therefore always takes place with the organic and biodynamic method, this means that no pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used but that the land is helped only with the composting technique and by adding manure and herbs. In these fantastic places, important biodiversity conservation work is also carried out (given the enormity of cultivated plants) and at the same time the creation of habitats for insects and small fauna which in turn keep parasites away. The rest of the plants come from areas selected for certified spontaneous harvesting or from suppliers.
Processing
All the manufacturing processes necessary to create cosmetic products, such as distillation or maceration, take place taking care to maintain the maximum quality of the raw materials and obtain maximum effectiveness from them at the same time. Even in the production phases Weleda shows its attention to sustainability by increasingly increasing the use of renewable energy, trying to reuse condensation water for example and increasingly reducing its use per kilogram of finished product.
NATRUE certification
Weleda products are NATRUE certified which is the first internationally recognized quality mark for natural and organic cosmetics. This mark guarantees that:
- the ingredients are natural and organic;
- the production method is sustainable;
- there are no synthetic colors and perfumes;
- there are no silicone oils and derivatives from petrochemical products;
- there is no testing on animals;
- all practices are environmentally friendly.
