• We always use Azo Free and natural dyes which have the least impact on the environment. We encourage our organic cotton range to promote sustainable fashion and protect the health and well-being of farmers.
• To recycle materials and reuse waste fabrics, we make beautiful bags.
• We will continue our research, in order to increase our range of organic cotton and biodegradable packaging.
• We promote awareness of the need to shop responsibly and push multinationals to work towards fair trade on a global level.

Working conditions

We personally inspect all the factories where our clothing is made.

We do this regularly to ensure workers are treated fairly and with respect, with regular visits throughout the year.

In India, it is illegal to use children under 16 years of age and this law is confirmed by all our suppliers. Workers are paid a good hourly rate. Wages are set by the Indian government by dividing workers into unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers. All employee salaries meet or exceed these levels for compensation. There is also equal opportunities for men and women who are paid the same wage for the same work – which is very important to Fairtrade principles.
There are pension schemes in place which employees can join and companies pay contributions to. Manufacturers benefit from a variety of subsidies and tax breaks for exporting goods in foreign currency. This is an incentive for factories to maintain good working conditions and responsible labor practices.

BAFTS

The British Association for Fair Trade Shops

BAFTS is a network of independent fair trade shops across the UK.
There are over 100 fair trade BAFTS retailers in the UK.

The main objectives of BAFTS are:

• Promote retailing of fair trade products across the UK
• Raising the profile of fair trading on the High Street
• Provide a point of contact and communication on fair trade
• Exchange ideas among members regarding fair trade news
• Provide links to other fair trade organizations, such as WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization)
• Keep members informed of important trade calendar trade show dates, including Fortnight Fair and World Fair Trade Day.
• BAFTS recognizes Nomads as a Fair Trade store and producer who is actively engaged in supporting producers, raising awareness, and promoting improvements in conventional international trade practices.

Nomads the story

Duncan and Vicky met while traveling in India in the late 1980s. With just £200 left in their pockets, they used the money to fill a trunk with beautiful ethnic clothing and returned to the UK.

They soon returned to India with the profits they had made, mixing business with pleasure; at Buddhist retreats, they discovered crafts in local markets and picked up beautiful handmade textiles along the way. A shared love for India and its culture inspired them to start their own clothing company. Inspired by Indian craft, they worked with a designer to create styles perfect for the European market, finding a niche for bohemian fashion with an ethnic twist.
